Godzilla PVR – an 11 tuner system with HD support
Are you a TV junkie? Do you need to record practically all the shows on television? If you’re that type of person, then you just have to check out the “Godzilla PVR” system that the folks at Snapstream created. It’s a monster of a box with 11 tuners.. that’s right.. 11 friggin tuners. This is broken down into 7 standard definition tuners and 4 HD tuners. Of course given that it’s being shown on Snapstream’s blog site, it’s running BeyondTV 4.
Curious about the specs? We certainly were. The system was housed inside a Silverstone LC16M case – not a small case by any means since it’s capable of housing up to 6 – 3.5 inch drives inside. Speaking of drives, what did these guys use? Four 250 GB SATA drives and two 160GB SATA drives for the OS and apps. The four 250GB drives were configured as RAID 0 and thus you instantly had one Terabyte of disk space for the DVR stuff.
Processing wise, they chose an Intel Pentium D 840 Extreme Edition processor – dual cores with hyperthreading goodness which makes for 4 threads at the same time. Not too shabby. So I like many others wondered about the overall cost of the setup. Luckily they mentioned it in the blog posting. It came out to a whopping $4284.90. Seems high but when you consider you now have a kick ass system capable of capturing 11 different video streams.. that isn’t bad at all.
