Here comes the name games folks. Just when Intel is about to formally launch the Viiv platform at CES, AMD introduces the Live platform for PCs. What exactly is Live? Well it’s a similar strategy to the Viiv initiative whereby any AMD Live PC is tuned for home entertainment. An example of this includes PC’s with 7.1 channel surround sound support. Although there are similarities between the two company strategies, there are differences in their approach. Intel’s approach centers around the entire platform which includes the processor, chipset, and networking chips. AMD’s approach is geared towards the processor. Intel also tests PC’s for Viiv compatibility with set top boxes while AMD relies on their third party OEMs to do the testing. One final thought – come on AMD.. couldn’t you come up with a better name than Live? Did it have to rhyme with Viiv? I love your processors but your marketing dept. could use a refresher course in creativity.
