The Gadgeteer reviews the DocuPen R700 Handheld Scanner here. The R700 is basically a portable 8.5 inch x 0.5 inch hand scanner that you can bring with you wherever you go. Tuck the scanner into your backpack or handbag and scan documents as you need to. Go to the bookstore, open up some books, and scan pages at your whim. You roll the scanner down the page with your hand and the images are stored into the 2MB of internal memory. Pretty nifty conceptually but what does the Gadgeteer think of it?

The biggest issues that I have with the DocuPen are the fact that it is not a color scanner and that it doesn’t scan images very well at all. The graphics that it scans are either Black or White. There is no greyscale. But for text, it works well enough to be a useful addition to any gear bag.
