LegitReview takes a look at the new Intel Pentium Extreme Edition Processor 955 (formerly known as Presler) CPU which will be formerly launched on Jan. 16th, 2006 for $999 - ouch.. that’s a bit steep for my pocket books but that’s why this is known as the Extreme Edition processor - it’s for the crazy nuts out there who need the absolute fastest. And is this thing fast? Well the new 955 is a dual core processor with some new features - including dual 2MB L2 caches - one for each core which means the die now has a total of 4MB of cache; a 266MHz quad pumped FSB; support for Intel’s new Virtualization Technology; and a new 65 nm process. LegitReview takes a look at how overclockable the CPU really is:

With an increase in the processor multiplier and some small voltage increases on the Intel 955 processor and the motherboard we could easily hit a stable 4.8GHz on our processor. That is a 1.3GHz overclock! How stable is it really? Stable enough to run Super Pi and a number of other benchmarks…

The European Union launched it’s first Galileo navigation satellite today in the hopes to end it’s reliance on the U.S. GPS navigation system. The new satellite went up in a Russian Soyuz rocket and is the first of what the EU hopes will be a total of 30 satellites. The new satellite is officially called Giove-A which stands for Galileo In-Orbit Validation Element and the service itself is expected to launch sometime in 2008. The Galileo navigation system has an accuracy of 3 feet or less while GPS precision is around 15 feet. The EU launching of the satellite is also a political move by the EU in the hopes of ending reliance on US technology. There’s always the threat that the US will cut off GPS services IF there is a strategic need to do so. The EU claims it would never do this with Galileo but only time will tell.

LaptopMag reviews the Lenovo ThinkPad R52 laptop here. The R52 has a 15 inch SXGA+ display, a built in Trusted Platform Module chip, a fingerprint reader for security purposes, and of course a beefy 1.73GHz Pentium M processor. You’ll also get 512MB of RAM and a 60GB HDD built right into the unit. The R series isn’t as thin as the T series nor as light as the X series, but it provides a good balance of power and value to businesses and consumers. Here’s the verdict from LaptopMag:

Affordably priced at $1,329 and backed by a one-year warranty with 24/7 toll-free tech support, the Lenovo ThinkPad R52 is an excellent value. It’s ideal for business users looking for a good combination of speed, security, and comfort.

I remember back in the late 90’s/early 2000, there were tons of computer enthusiasts overclocking their processors to achieve higher performance while using cheaper processors. The OC news has faded somewhat over the last few years but here we go again - some folks who are taking Celeron M mobile processors and overclocking them like mad. One person managed to take his Celeron M 1.4GHz and bring it up to 4.15GHz.. that’s a crazy 197% increase in clock speed. Of course, you’ll want to consider a very good cooling system for that processor but my god man! Will it end? Another person took a 1.5GHz Celeron M and brought it up to 3.6GHz (as reported by Nordic Hardware). Using a Celeron M processor isn’t a bad idea for these overclocking tricks - they’re already low powered so bringing them up a notch shouldn’t be too hard. The interesting thing will be to see how stable the rest of the system is. Gotta try this out someday.

T-Break reviews the Creative Zen MicroPhoto here. This 8GB player features a 262,144-color OLED Display and support for music and digital images. There’s a removable and rechargeable 15 hour battery, an FM radio and recorder, an integrated voice recorder, and syncing capabilities with Microsoft Outlook contacts, Calendar, and tasks. The verdict from the folks at T-Break?

All in all, Creative does a pretty good job with the Micro Photo. While it may not be as stylish as an iPod, it still looks pretty good and has better features and sound quality along with a whopping 8GB storage capacity.
