The lucky geeks over at Anandtech have managed to get their hands on a dual core Intel Yonah system which of course is now known as the Intel Core Duo platform. (note – single core Yonah systems will be known as Core Solo). The entire platform is still known as the Intel Centrino platform but the Pentium M processor itself is no more. Ok. enough of that – Anandtech reviews the new mobile platform against AMD’s dual core Athlon 64 X2 processor. The verdict?

Our initial analysis still holds true, that for a notebook processor, the Core Duo will be nothing short of amazing for professionals. Looking at the performance improvements offered everywhere from media encoding to 3D rendering, you’re going to be able to do a lot more on your notebook than you originally thought possible (without resorting to a 12-pound desktop replacement).

So things look very promising for Intel with the Core Duo processor. The real question will be how fast Intel can crank up the clock speeds of the Core Duo’s to match or beat AMD’s offerings. However, pound for pound, these processors are fairly even – although the Core Duo does have a larger cache while the AMD processor has the on die memory controller.

I’m particularly excited for HTPC systems that could use the lower power requirements of the Yonah processor while not sacrificing on processor performance.
