VMware has always been my virtual machine system of choice when it came to running multiple OS’s at the same time on the same machine. If you’re not familiar with VMware, it’s basically an application which creates and emulates a PC on your Windows or Linux desktop. This emulation is a self contained environment called a Virtual PC. You can then install your favorite OS of choice within the virtual machine.

Now VMware is making a new freeware application called VMware Player which can play VMs created by VMware Workstation or even preconfigured VMs downloaded from their website. The player is in beta still but PC Magazine has decided to review it anyhow. Here’s the verdict:

The free VMware Player brings many of the benefits of virtual machines to the average user. It can’t create VMs and doesn’t include the most advanced features of the $189 VMware Workstation. But it lets the user run alternate operating systems or configurations with ease, even those created using non-VMware products.
