NBC and CBS have announced partnerships with DirectTV and Comcast to deliver on demand programming for 99 cents an episode. NBC will be working with DirectTV to make some of their primetime programming available within hours of broadcast for 0.99 cents. NBC shows that will be available include: Law and Order, Surface, and the Office. NBC will also be making USA and Sci Fi programming available including Monk and Battlestar Galactica. These shows will be made available in an ad free format for DirecTV subscribers who purchase the DirecTV Plus Interactive DVR.

Meanwhile CBS has partnered with Comcast to deliver episodes of CSI, NCIS, Survivor, and the Amazing Race also for 0.99 cents an episode. The episodes will be available for 24 hours after purchase and will still include the original ads in the shows.

Honestly, I don’t really know how well these will take off. I can understand the notion of purchasing videos for use on an iPod but purchasing videos for your television set? If you have a DVR, you probably already recorded the show you wanted to watch in which case you can easily skip over the ads anytime you want. So why bother? Unless CBS and NBC plan on allowing customers the ability to bring the content with them on portable devices like the iPod, I see no point in purchasing content if I can record them on a DVR.
