eMagin Z800 3DVisor Stereoscopic Headset reviewed
ExtremeTech reviews the eMagin Z800 3DVisor Stereoscopic Headset here. The Z800 headsets provide dual color OLED displays which are capable of displaying 800 x 600 resolutions. The displays also support a palette of 16.67 million colors and have a 200:1 contrast ratio. Unlike older stereoscopic headsets that required a large power adapter, the Z800 can be connected to a PC’s USB port for power (I just love USB powered devices folks!)
Stereoscopic glasses have never really taken off in the consumer market – mostly because there weren’t many applications that really made use of them, and hardware configurations were tedious to say the least. The Z800 isn’t exactly the easiest device to set up either as ExtremeTech found out. You’ll need to have an NVIDIA card (ATI doesn’t offer stereoscopic drivers) with very specific drivers installed. Games also must run at 800 x 600 – too low of a resolution for some users out there.
Despite these issues, what does ExtremeTech think of the glasses?
The Z800 is a well-designed, lightweight headset that’s one of the more comfortable we’ve tested. If you’re into completely immersing yourself in a 3D world, then the Z800 is worth checking out. But the price of entry is steep, and some people never quite get used to the effect.
