If you’re looking for a new computer or are attempting to build a new computer but are put off by the myriad of processor choices, you should check out this article over at ExtremeTech.com. They go through a battery of tests on a collection of processors from Intel and AMD – all in an effort to determine a sweet spot for price vs. performance. What do they find?

There’s no clear-cut price/performance leader, unless you simply believe that the lowest-cost CPU will offer the most bang for the buck. We were impressed with how the Athlon 64 3800+ placed, generally offering a slightly better position on the overall curve than most other CPUs. On the other hand, the Athlon 64 3700+, one notch below the 3700+ in price, looks to be the odd duck, and we’d recommend you avoid this one if possible.

There are Intel choices out there but time and time again it appears that AMD’s Athlon 64 is the way to go for price/performance conscious individuals.
