Intel has announced that the next three revisions of the Itanium processor will be delayed several months to a year. The first major revision to the Itanium lineup was to be the Montecito processor – due out at the end of this year and to be in full production early next year. Now Intel plans on releasing the Montecito processor half way through 2006.

In the meantime, Montvale (the 2nd major revision) will be pushed to 2007 from 2006 and Tukwila will be pushed all the way back to 2008. Why all the delays? Intel has had to deal with several production issues with the Itanium processor and as a result has decided to make sure things look ok before going into mass production.

In the meantime, Intel is pushing the focus on XEON by bumping up the performance of the processor. To increase performance, Intel will be releasing a revision called Tigerton which will feature a new high speed interconnect to the system motherboard. Intel plans to drop the usage of the Front Side Bus on the XEON platform which hobbles the performance of the server oriented chip when compared to newer processor designs such as the AMD Opteron processor.
