Some of you may have wondered why only Yahoo and Microsoft decided to cooperate on IM. What about AOL? Would they see Google as a possible threat? Well folks – the landscape has changed. Google and Comcast Corp. are in discussions to buy a stake in Time Warner Inc’s America Online reportedly worth 5 billion dollars. An alliance between the three companies would have far reaching implications. It would bring together Time Warner’s expertise in media with Comcast’s high speed cable network with Google’s search technology.

One possible idea being floated is the notion that Google and Comcast would own half of AOL but Time Warner would still have a controlling stake. Don’t count Microsoft out yet though – they’re also in supposed talks with Time Warner. It’s hard to say where these talks will go because they’re still in early stages. Whatever the case may be, the internet landscape is sure to change over the next year or so. If Google and Comcast have their way, then a super media company would be formed that would easily outgun the likes of Yahoo and possible even threaten Microsoft for once.
