The Gadgeteer reviews the latest PDA entry from Sharp – the Sharp Zaurus SL-C3100. The SL-C3100 is a Linux based PDA with the following hardware specifications:

  • 416mhz Intel XScale CPU
  • 64MB RAM
  • 128MB flash memory
  • 4GB internal microdrive
  • 3.7″ 640 x 480 TFT CG Silicon display (pivotable, touchscreen)
  • CF/SD card slot
  • Integrated QWERTY thumbboard
  • Mini-USB port (USB 1.1 compatible, supports USB host)
  • IR port
  • Mono speaker
  • Headphone jack
  • Size: 4.9 x 3.4 x 1.0 inches (124 x 87 x 25mm).
  • Weight: 10.5 ounces (298 grams).

I have some friends who use the Zaurus and absolutely love it because it runs Linux and because it’s more than just a normal PDA. However, if you’re looking for a “normal PDA”, then the Zaurus may be a bit overkill for your needs.

The verdict from the Gadgeteer?

If you want to use the Zaurus just as it is without doing any manual configuration, I’d probably give it a 6 or 7 out of 10. But for people who don’t mind learning how to customize it, I’d give it a 9 out of 10. I
