If you’ve been thinking about getting yourself a DVR but wanted something else other than TiVo, then check out ExtremeTech’s article on Windows PVRs. There are plenty of options to look at when it comes to building a Windows based DVR system and we’re not just talking about Microsoft Windows Media Center 2005 (which I built one with). Other options include Beyond TV, Sage TV, and PowerCinema.
Of course you could go the route of TiVo or even use your cable companies’ DVR system or create a Linux box with DVR capabilities.. but why not look at what’s available for your existing Windows system today? Of course, my preference is still with MCE 2005 but hey – make that decision yourself.
Here’s a blurb from the end of their article:
If we had to pick one, we would recommend SageTV for the complete package, if you don’t mind a bit of a clumsy interface. If all you’re interested in is TV (not DVD, music, photos, and video), Beyond TV is the better choice. What we really want to recommend is PowerCinema, which has a fantastic interface and feature set, but with no EPG we wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole.
