NEC MultiSync FE992-BK 19 Inch CRT Display reviewed
You read it correctly folks … a CRT display being reviewed. Man I haven’t seen one of these reviewed in YEARS! Well the folks over at XYZ Computing manage to put an article together about the NEC MultiSync FE992-BK 19 Inch CRT Display here. It’s a 19 inch monitor with the following features:
* 1280 x 1024 @ 85 Hz
* Dot Pitch (horizontal): 0.25mm
* Weight: 47.6 lbs.
* Dimensions: 17.6 x 17.8 x 18.7 in.
* Cabinet Color: Black or White
* Resolutions Supported: 640 x 480 @ 60-160 Hz, 800 x 600 @ 55-153 Hz, 832 x 624 @ 55-144 Hz, 1024 x 768 @ 55-120 Hz, 1152 x 864 @ 55-105 Hz, 1280 x 1024 @ 55-89 Hz, 1600 x 1200 @ 55-75 Hz
The verdict?
The FE992-BK is a value display plain and simple. It has some nice upgrades from the CRTs of the past, like a flat screen and reduced cabinet size, but the use of a shadow mask and the lack of extras like a built-in USB hub do not allow it to be competitive with the higher end CRTs which have become more important to the remaining CRT diehards. A decreased dot pitch of 0.24mm would have improved the image a bit but this would increase the cost of the display. The upside of all this is that the monitor can be found for a reasonable, sub-$200 price tag if you shop around a bit.

Let’s not forget something in the age of LCDs.. CRTs are still GREAT for gaming!
