This isn’t much of a surprise really but DirecTV has announced that it will stop marketing TiVo DVRs this year in favor of a new system being developed by NDS Group. The move isn’t unexpected since News Corp. is a major shareholder in both DirecTV and NDS Group (you see the connection now). This is also one of the main reasons TiVo is branching out into video on demand services. As it begins to lose DirecTV customers (which accounts for 2/3rds of the subscribers), it will need to generate new revenue streams for the future. One has to wonder how good the NDS solution will be for DirecTV customers. Although I do not use TiVo now, I do admire the user inteface designs of a TiVo system. They really do understand how people work.
