NVIDIA took the lids off their latest graphics technology – the G70 and it’s officially known as the GeForce 7800 GTX. There’s a slew of reviews out on the net but I won’t post them here since you can easily find them via Google or other sites. I will post ExtremeTech’s review here. But you’re probably wondering what ET thinks of the new card/technology:
In many ways, this is a really impressive piece of technology. It’s an absolutely enormous processor, over 300 million transistors on the same .11 micron process as the 6800 series. It packs in a third more vertex pipes and 50% more pixel pipes, all redesigned to increase efficiency and ratchet up performance. It begs the question: How many of these things can Nvidia effectively produce? At $599, the simple answer is, “they don’t need to produce many to satisfy demand.” The market for $600 graphics cards just isn’t very big, and the GTX variant is the only announced model. We’re anxious to see this architecture brought down to more reasonably-priced models.
This sucker is fast and expensive so the real moral of the story is – don’t get it unless you have cash to burn and you actually have a real need for it. I’ll wait till this technology comes down to 100 bucks thank you very much!
