Apple sued over the iTunes interface
Contois Music Technology has apparently asked a Federal Court to stop Apple from distributing iTunes software and is seeking damages over an alleged patent violation by the software. The suit stems from a supposed violation on a six year old patent called “Computer Control System and User Interface for Media Playing Devices.” Supposedly David Contois of Contois Music Technology came up with an idea on how to play music on internal/external computer responsive music devices and showed it off at Comdex 1995 and at the 1996 NAMM music industry trade show. The suit claims that Apple employees then saw the demo and used it as the basis for iTunes. I wonder how much press this will get but if the court decides to uphold this claim, it will prove to be a headache for Apple since iTunes is arguably one of the most popular music software applications out there.
