Researchers at UCLA are looking into ways of improving the piracy protection schemes in place for movies. Rajit Gadh is looking into how one might use RFID tags to better protect the movie studio’s investments. No one is quite sure how this might work but it may involve taking a snapshot of your fingerprint onto the DVD. Then a special DVD player would need to authenticate the movie viewer by asking the users to press their fingerprint on a scanner. This definitely seems like the wrong way to go for movies. Despite the piracy that is going on, DVD sales are still going through the roof. I can imagine this sort of technology actually driving users away from the media.
