WinHEC Day 2
ExtremeTech has some coverage of day 2 at WinHEC here.
There were some very interesting Tablet PC designs and prototypes. Acer had an convertable notebook which looked similar to HP’s Tablet PC design.

Intel had a unique 7 inch system that was actually running Windows Media Center 2005.

There were some other cool items on display at WinHEC. TI had an innovative modular usage model for mobile PCs where PCI Express-to-PCI bridge chips coupled with ExpressCard interfaces allowed users to have docking stations without lugging around heavy equipment.

Check out the article for some other neat items.

Intel and ATI enjoy lead in graphics market
Jod Peddie Research has some new numbers showing Intel and ATI in the lead for graphics chipset shipments. ATI has the lead in the desktop discrete graphics segment with a 51.4 percent market share while NVIDIA has a 46.8 percent market share. Intel maintained the lead as the overall graphics supplier and also in the mobile market. This isn’t too surprising given the fact that most motherboards shipped today include an Intel chipset (assuming you are getting an Intel processor) which includes an integrated graphics unit usually. It’s interesting to see how Intel has managed to claim the lead in graphics given its humble beginnings with the Intel 740 graphics card back in 1997. I was a part of those days at Intel when they tried to directly compete against the heavyweights of NVIDIA, ATI, and 3DFX. Ahh the good ol days..

Dahlquist QX8a Tower Speaker
FutureLooks reviews the Dahlquist QX8a Tower Speaker system here. I love the way the drivers look with that off-blue color tint. What’s the verdict on these speakers?
For those of you looking for speakers around the $1000 price point, I highly suggest that you put these speakers on your list to audition, or try the QX-10A from Dahlquist, a larger version of QX-8A’s that should add on some lower end thump.

Shuttle SN25P
[H]ard|OCP reviews the Shuttle SN25P which is an NVIDIA nForce4 MCP based SFF system. The barebones unit supports your usual array of PCI-E slots, SATA ports, and Gigabit Ethernet. Shuttle uses a new case design for their Athlon64 based lineup and it even beefs up the internal power supply. What’s the verdict?
The SN25P is definitely another design win for Shuttle. Their new case design was very well thought out and implemented, with a lot more internal room than in previous designs without sacrificing cooling or performance.

NeuNeo HVD208 High Definition DVD Player
ByteSector reviews the NeuNeo HVD208 High Definition DVD Player - an updated version of the HVD108. What’s different about this one? It supports HDMI connections and can now display video at 1080p! Of course you’ll need to get a television set that supports 1080p inputs and really only new HDTV sets support it. I may have to consider upgrading to this DVD player if it really is as good as it sounds. So what’s ByteSector’s final verdict?
I am truly satisfied with this player and did not see any downsides after applying the firmware upgrade. The sound playback is fantastic, the HVD results are stunning, and the playback performance is exceptional.

Uneed International x.15E HTPC case
I just love HTPC case reviews. The manufacturers keep getting better and better at case designs that merge the design elements of a home theater component with the functionality of a PC. HTPCnews reviews the Uneed International x.15E HTPC case which looks a lot like other Ahanix branded cases except that it has an embedded touchscreen LCD screen in the front. Total SWEETNESS. The screen has a resolution of 800 x 600 which means you can view your PC’s display without having to route the screen to your monitor or television set.
So what’s the verdict?
The Uneed x15 case certainly is unique and fairly well designed case. The touch screen was a great add on that really makes this case stand out from the rest of the market and even allows you to put your own personal touch on, as I did with the Konfabulator widgets.

The only thing I have to say is.. WOW.. that case is big.

Toshiba demonstrates the Cell processor
Toshiba demo’d the Cell processor at the COOL Chips VIII conference in Yokohama from April 20th to the 22nd. The demo was actually shown as a film clip to the audience. During the demo, 48 separate MPEG2 streams were decoded by a Cell processor and projected to a 1920 x 1080 resolution display divided into 8 x 6 cells each with a different video shown. Toshiba used a custom built OS to drive the demo - sounds like a lot of promise.

Jacetech JP-2010A
DAPreview has some news on the new Jacetech JP-2010A Digital Audio Player. This device apparently allows users to swap out the internal 1.8 inch Toshiba Hard Drive for a new one. It also has a 3.5 inch LCD screen capable of 320 x 240 resolutions, an FM Tuber, support for MPEG1/2/4, DviX, XviD, MP3, WMA, OGG, AC3, JPEG, BMP, and TXT files, and a removeable battery. Overall, the idea is sound to have these removeable units but it’s definitely true that it will be hard to find 1.8inch hard drives on the market.
