Jod Peddie Research has some new numbers showing Intel and ATI in the lead for graphics chipset shipments. ATI has the lead in the desktop discrete graphics segment with a 51.4 percent market share while NVIDIA has a 46.8 percent market share. Intel maintained the lead as the overall graphics supplier and also in the mobile market. This isn’t too surprising given the fact that most motherboards shipped today include an Intel chipset (assuming you are getting an Intel processor) which includes an integrated graphics unit usually. It’s interesting to see how Intel has managed to claim the lead in graphics given its humble beginnings with the Intel 740 graphics card back in 1997. I was a part of those days at Intel when they tried to directly compete against the heavyweights of NVIDIA, ATI, and 3DFX. Ahh the good ol days..
