Intel has announced that it has begun sending out WiMax chipsets to equipment manufactures which are then planning to create products around them by this fall. WiMax (otherwise known as 802.16-2004) promises to work over greater distances than the current Wi-Fi protocols and offer maximum speeds of up to 70mbps. If WiMax works, this could be the enabling technology that allows remote communities to have high speed internet access. Here’s a picture of the chipset being sent to developers.
