This is pretty much old news for today now – but in case you didn’t hear – Adobe is purchasing Macromedia for a sum total of 3.4 billion dollars. Why would Adobe want to do this? It all boils down to dominating web technologies. The combined forces of Adobe and Macromedia own file formats such as PDF and Flash, as well as Shockwave. The companies also own enabling tools such as Photoshop, Acrobat, Dreamweaver, and many other tools that developers will depend on. Why do this now? It’s clear that the number one enemy to combat against is of course Microsoft. I think it’s a good deal for both sides to come together and come up with a unified front but I also have to wonder how this will hurt consumer choice. Anyhow, more on this here.
