Hitachi claims leap in drive density
Hitachi claims to have made a leap in drive density by going to the third dimension. Using perpendicular recording, Hitachi will be coming out with hard drives capable of containing 230 gigabits of data per square inch. What does this mean exactly? Well how about an Apple mini holding 20 GB of music? How about portable video players capable of storing loads of media? All this is possible because drive makers are finally making use of the third dimension. In perpendicular recording, data is aligned vertically as opposed to horizontally allowing for more data to be squeezed into the existing space. Pretty nifty stuff!
